Stress is a natural physical and mental reaction to life experiences. Everyone expresses stress from time to time. For immediate, short-term situations, stress can be beneficial to health. It can help you cope with potentially serious situations. Your body responds to stress by releasing hormones that increase your heart and breathing rates and ready your muscles to respond.
Yet if your stress response doesn’t stop firing, and these stress levels stay elevated far longer than is necessary for survival, it can take a toll on your health. Chronic stress can cause a variety of symptoms and affect your overall well being. Being able to recognize common stress symptoms can help you manage them. Stress that’s left unchecked can contribute to many health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, irritability, anxiety, depression, headaches, insomnia and so on.
Chronic and continuous stress can have debilitating effects on one’s state of health if it is not managed well. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the management of one’s stress levels. Here are a few points to check out
Exercise; Working out regularly is one of the best ways to relax your body and mind. Exercise will improve your mood but, you have to do it often for it to pay off. So how much should you exercise every day? About 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise like brisk walks or about 15 minutes of a more vigorous exercise like swimming laps & jogging. Focus on setting fitness goals you can meet so you don’t give up. Most of all remember that doing any exercise is better than none at all.
Relax your muscles; when you’re stressed, your muscles get tense. You can help loosen them up on your own and refresh your body by: stretching, enjoying a massage, taking a hot bath or shower. All these help one to get a good night’s sleep, which is a good way to relax your muscles.
Eat well; eating a regular, well-balanced meal will help you feel better in general. It may also help control your moods. Your meals should be full of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and lean protein for energy. Don’t skip meals.
